The Univolt Swap!
The Univolt is Airstreams name for the charging system in my '71 Safari. Unfortunately after 30 years it decided to quit working. I guess it was time to retire.
My Univolt had the fuse box built into it. So I had to build a separate fuse box. Typically when you replace the Univolt system you loose two features. The Power On light indicator and the Panel Amp meter. I have decided to try and keep these functions. I took the ground shunt from the Univolt and added it to my fuse box. My hope is that it will keep the amp meter functional.
Above are pictures of the old Univolt system. To the right is the old fuse panel removed from the Univolt.
| The above pictures are of my new fuse panel. It is
built from a project box from Radio Shack, heavy duty fuse holder, and miscellaneous
hardware. I put a hinge on it so when it is mounted, the door will
swing open providing easy access to all the fuses.
I also printed up the label to the right to aid in remembering what the fuses are for. I kept the original wire color scheme. The charger will be a triple mode charger that delivers the charge as needed and goes into a lower maintenance charge as needed. It is a Stat Power True charge 20. |
